Import a project file

Turn a foundation-project.json file from one of our skills into a Foundation project with computed results.

Our skills write a foundation-project.json file when they work without a Foundation account. Importing it creates a new project with those inputs, and the engine computes the results straight away.

Import it

  1. Sign in at getfndtn.com.
  2. On Your projects, find Have a project file from a Foundation skill?
  3. Choose the file and click Import.

Foundation opens the new project's dashboard. Your existing projects are never changed by an import.

If the import is refused

Foundation checks the file before creating anything, and tells you exactly what's wrong. It refuses anything that would otherwise be saved but silently ignored by the calculations:

  • a cost category that doesn't exist;
  • a misspelled column name, such as monthly_cost instead of monthlyCost;
  • text in a number column, such as "about 500".

Anything the file leaves out simply keeps the default a new project would have. Hand the error message back to your assistant: it can fix the file in one go.

What the file contains

A plain JSON file with the project name, business type, currency, the active cost categories, every line item, the financial assumptions, and optionally market sizing and a competitor benchmark. The full format is in the project file reference.
